The British golfer Luke Donald wants to make it to the European Ryder Cup team desperately. He is looking forward to join the European team that will be captained by Darren Clarke.

The Ryder Cup is slated to take place in September. His last appearance at the Ryder Cup was way back in 2012.

Donald has had the opportunity to be part of the winning Ryder Cup team and wants to add another Ryder Cup title to his accolades. He is looking to string together very good performances in all the golfing events leading up to the Ryder Cup so that he becomes a clear favorite for the European team. He pretty well knows that the going is a bit tough and is determined to play his A game in order to earn an entry into the team.

The 38 year old English golfer has not been part of a Ryder Cup team since 2012. It was then that he made his fourth appearance in a Ryder Cup event. He has said openly that his goal is to be in the lovely Ryder Cup team and winning the tournaments before the big cup would put him in great stead to join the team.

While WGC-Dell Match Play puts up the best a stern test only 2 weeks before the Masters, Puerto Rico Open concentrates more on giving hope.


The event that had long been played opposite WGC Cadillac Championship, now sees this against the 2nd WGC upshot of the year. And when its participants might not have a lot of household names, this year Puerto Rico boasts a duo of former Ryder Cup mates in Luke Donald and Ian Poulter, each looking for answers.

Former world number one English professional golfer Luke Donald confirmed that he will play in next month’s Dubai Duty Free Irish Open along with US Open champion Martin Kaymer at Royal County Down. The richest Irish tour now includes 5 current or former players who have been world number one like current Number One Rory McIlroy, Els, Kaymer Donald, Ernie, and Lee Westwood and 8 Major Champions McIlroy, Kaymer, Els, Darren Clarke, Graeme McDowell, Padraig Harrington, José Maria Olazábal and Paul Lawrie. McIlroy’s charity and The Rory Foundation are hosting the Irish Open to support and promote the event in his native Down. The tournament will take place from May 38-31. The Dubai Duty Free is the title sponsor of the tour and the prize fund will increase by 25% to €2.5 million with the 2015 champion taking home €416,660. Last year Mikko Ilonen won the title and took home €333,330.

The championship director Antonia Beggs has said that Rory wishes to reel in more big names in the tournament. 20,000 spectators per day will be able to attend, whereas during the Sunday’s final round they are already close to a sell-out. 22% of the tickets have been bought from outside Northern Ireland. Luke Donald is a professional golfer from England who currently plays on both the European Tour as well as the US PGA Tour. A former world number one, Donald mainly plays on the US based PGA Tour but he retains his membership with the European Tour.

2011 was the best season in the career of Donald as he won several accolades and events, including the money list of the US PGA Tour, as well as the European Tour’s Race to Dubai to complete a historic double, therefore, becoming the first player in the history of the sport to win the money list in both the European and US PGA Tours. That same year, he was named as the European Tour Golfer of the Year and the US PGA Tour Player of the Year, another feat that has not been matched.

Donald is the first Englishman in history to win the US PGA Tour Player of the Year award, the Mark H. McCormack Award as well as the Vardon Trophy. The European Tour granted Luke Donald an honorary life membership for the achievements he had during that year.

After he won the BMW PGA Championship in 2011, Donald catapulted himself to the top of the Official World Golf Rankings, holding the position for 40 weeks before being displaced by Rory McIlroy. The pair of them then briefly changed positions a couple of times before the Northern Irishman tightened his grip on the position. The Englishman realises that this yea, it is about getting back to his roots, his strengths. Donald could play in a few European Tour events but he knows he strives on the West Coast Swing of the US PGA Tour and that is where he plans to start his year.

And he begins his 2015 season with an event that he hopes will lead him back to the top, at the Sony Open. He was world number one for a brief period before he was gazumped by Rory McIlroy, followed by Tiger Woods and then Rory McIlroy again on the back of consecutive major triumphs. Luke Donald has been the number one golfer not very long back. He has missed out on selection for the Europe’s Ryder Cup event’s team. He has taken the selection as very harsh on himself but sources have revealed that the players who have been picked before him like Lee Westwood, Stephen Gallacher and Ian Poulter would also have reacted in a similar way.

Luke Donald has been a two time club champion among the juniors and has ever since also been a reputed and beloved member of the Hazlemere club for golf. The chairman of the same club Rod Jones too has a very high opinion about Luke Donald. Inspite of all this, the chairman feels that it is glad to see that Luke Donald was the one not taken in the team. Paul Mcginley was the one who had to make the tough call and he has indeed carried out his part in the best way possible.

Sources also said that since Luke always played games and events here and there and loved the sport is definitely missed. There are a number of members of the club as well as people outside who love and miss Luke. There have been talks about how people had lowered their expectations of Luke getting in as the selection had come closer. Initially they were expecting his selection but soon it was just hopes left. This is the reason why many people were not very much shocked.

With all the happenings the vice captain of the team has also said on behalf of the captain that letting Luke out and breaking that news to him was one of the most difficult things he had ever done. However, if a person like Luke Donald has been made to sit out you can well imagine the strength of the team.
